The Showa fork cartridge damper rods on the Showa 49mm twin chamber fork which is stock on the Honda CRF250R, Honda CRF450R, Kawasaki KX250F, Kawasaki KX450F, Suzuki RMZ450, and Suzuki RMZ250 dirt bike motorcycles are known for two common issues.

Firstly the oem showa fork cartridge damper rod coating can wear during normal riding and use.  The wear of the worn showa fork cartrdige damper rod coating can be visually seen as a shiny spot on the cartrige damper rod.  Once this coating begins to wear the showa fork cartridge rod seal life will decrease and likely fail.  When the showa cartridge rod seal fails the fork cartridge damper assembly will not perform as intended.  Instead oil will leak from the showa fork cartridge damper assembly from the seal which will reducing how effectively the cartrdige damper assembly generates compression and rebound resistance.  Common symptons are the forks feel softer on compression and rebound much faster often creating a clunking sensation when the forks top out on full extension.

Secondly some people expereince the threads on the fork cartridge rod to strip out where the rebound clicker and lock nut is located during the dis-assembly of the fork.  This comes from the original design of the Showa fork cartrige damper rod not engaging all of the threads of the cartridge rod and locknut during dis-assembly.
